Maryland MEA Residential Clean Energy Grant: Complete Guide for EV Charger Owners

July 2025
5 min read

The Maryland Energy Administration offers up to $700 back for EV charger installation. Here's exactly how to apply and what documentation you need.

What Is the MEA Residential Grant?

The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) Residential Clean Energy Grant Program provides rebates for homeowners who install qualified clean energy equipment, including Level 2 EV chargers. For EV chargers, the grant covers up to 50% of the installed system cost, capped at $700. The grant is funded annually by the state and available on a first-come, first-served basis — applications submitted later in the year may find funds exhausted.

Who Qualifies

To qualify, you must: be a Maryland resident and property owner (renters do not qualify), install a Level 2 (240V) EV charger at your primary or secondary Maryland residence, have the installation performed by a licensed Maryland electrician with all required permits and inspections completed, and apply within 12 months of the installation date.

What You'll Need to Apply

Gather these before starting the application: itemized invoice from your licensed electrician showing labor and equipment costs separately, copy of the electrical permit, copy of the final electrical inspection approval, proof of property ownership (deed or tax record), and the charger's model number and purchase receipt. Applications are submitted online through MEA's portal at energy.maryland.gov.

Timeline

MEA processes applications in 4–8 weeks. Approved grants are paid by check to the property owner. If your application is incomplete, MEA will request additional documentation — respond promptly to avoid delays. Apply as early in the calendar year as possible since the annual fund can run out.

Combining with Other Incentives

The MEA grant does not affect your eligibility for the federal Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit (30%) or utility rebates from BGE, Pepco, or other Maryland utilities. You can and should claim all applicable incentives. The MEA grant reduces your out-of-pocket cost for purposes of calculating the federal credit — you'd apply the federal credit to the remaining cost after the MEA grant.
