How Long Does EV Charger Installation Take in Maryland?

What to expect on installation day — from a simple 2-hour Level 2 install to a full panel upgrade job. Here's the complete timeline.

Standard Installation: 2–4 Hours

A standard Level 2 EV charger installation — dedicated 240V circuit, charger mounted in the garage, permit pulled — takes 2–4 hours from the time the electrician arrives. The bulk of the time is running conduit and wire from your panel to the charger location. If the panel is directly behind the garage wall, it can be as fast as 90 minutes.

Panel Upgrade + Charger: 4–8 Hours

If your home needs a 100A-to-200A panel upgrade before the charger can be installed, plan for a full day. The panel swap itself takes 3–4 hours, then the charger installation adds another 2–3 hours. BGE and Pepco require a utility representative to be present for reconnection, which can add 1–2 hours of coordination time.

Permit and Inspection Timeline

Maryland counties require an electrical permit before installation. Most counties (Howard, Montgomery, Anne Arundel, Prince George's) issue permits within 1–3 business days of application. Inspection is typically scheduled within a week of installation. Your licensed electrician manages all of this — you don't need to coordinate with the county yourself.

From Quote to Installed

From the time you accept a quote to charger installed and inspected, most Maryland homeowners are looking at 5–10 business days. We schedule installations as quickly as permits allow, and in many counties, same-week installation is possible for straightforward jobs.
