Installing an EV Charger Without a Garage: Options for Maryland Homeowners

November 2024
4 min read

No garage, no problem. Maryland homeowners without a garage have several good options for outdoor Level 2 EV charger installation.

Outdoor Charger Options

If you don't have a garage, you can still install a Level 2 EV charger. Options include: a weatherproof wall-mounted charger on the exterior of your home (if parking is adjacent to the house), a pedestal-mounted charger in your driveway or carport, or a post-mounted unit for longer driveway runs. All require a 240V circuit run from your main panel with weatherproof conduit and junction boxes.

Weatherproof Ratings Matter

Maryland's humid summers, winter ice storms, and coastal salt air mean outdoor charger ratings matter. Look for NEMA 4-rated enclosures (weatherproof and dust-tight) rather than basic NEMA 3R (rain-resistant only). The ChargePoint Home Flex, Wallbox Pulsar Plus, and JuiceBox 40 are all NEMA 4 rated and well-suited for Maryland outdoor installation.

Conduit to a Detached Garage or Carport

If parking is in a detached structure, you have two options: overhead aerial conduit between buildings (code-compliant with proper clearance) or underground conduit burial (more aesthetically clean). Underground conduit in Maryland requires digging a trench 18–24 inches deep for schedule 80 PVC with conductors in conduit. Cost for a 30–50 foot trench run typically adds $400–$800 to the installation.

HOA Considerations for Outdoor Installations

If you live in an HOA community, check guidelines on exterior wiring and equipment before committing to an outdoor installation. Some HOAs have aesthetic standards that govern conduit colors, charger placement, or require approval for any exterior modification. Maryland law prohibits HOAs from unreasonably blocking EV charger installation, but 'reasonable' aesthetic requirements are generally enforceable.
