Does Your Maryland Home Need a Panel Upgrade Before Installing an EV Charger?

About 30% of Maryland homes need an electrical panel upgrade before a Level 2 charger can be installed. Here's how to tell if yours is one of them.

The 30% Rule

In our experience across hundreds of Maryland installations, about 30% of homes — particularly those built before 1990 — need a panel upgrade before we can safely install a Level 2 EV charger. The reason: a Level 2 charger requires a dedicated 240V, 40–60A circuit. Older 100A panels often don't have the capacity to add that circuit without overloading the service.

Signs You Probably Need an Upgrade

You likely need a panel upgrade if: your main breaker is 100A or less, your panel is a Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) or Zinsco brand (these are fire hazards and should be replaced regardless), you frequently trip breakers when running high-draw appliances simultaneously, or your panel has no open slots for a new double-pole breaker. An electrician can assess this in 15 minutes during a site visit.

Signs You Probably Don't

You're likely fine if: your panel is 200A service, it's been updated in the last 20 years, it has open breaker slots, and you don't regularly trip breakers. Most new construction and homes built after 2000 in Maryland are already at 200A service.

What a Panel Upgrade Costs in Maryland

A 100A-to-200A panel upgrade in Maryland runs $1,200–$2,500 depending on the panel location, whether the meter base needs replacing, and utility coordination requirements (BGE and Pepco have different reconnection processes). Howard County and Montgomery County permit fees differ slightly. We can complete the panel upgrade and EV charger installation in a single visit in most cases.

Can You Avoid the Upgrade?

In some cases, yes. If you have a 125A or 150A panel with available capacity, we may be able to add the EV circuit without a full upgrade. Some installers also use a smart panel device (like Span or Leviton Load Center) to manage circuit loads dynamically — this can avoid a full upgrade in borderline situations.
