When Is the Best Time to Install an EV Charger in Maryland?

Timing your EV charger installation right can save you money and get you scheduled faster. Here's what Maryland homeowners should know.

Apply for MEA Grants Early in the Year

The Maryland Energy Administration's Residential Clean Energy Grant program is funded annually and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Historically, funds have run out before year-end in popular years. The practical implication: if you're planning to install and claim the MEA rebate, earlier in the calendar year is better. January through May applications have historically had the highest approval rates.

Weather and Installation Season

EV charger installation is an indoor electrical job — the bulk of the work happens in your garage and at your panel. Maryland weather doesn't significantly affect interior installation timelines. However, if you need a conduit run underground to a detached garage, late fall and winter can complicate outdoor work. For most homeowners with attached garages, installation is equally straightforward year-round.

Contractor Availability

EV charger installers in Maryland are busiest in spring and early summer — the same season when EV sales spike after tax season and when homeowners think about home improvement projects. If you want faster scheduling and potentially more pricing flexibility, late fall and winter (October through February) tend to have more open installer calendars.

When You Just Bought Your EV

The best time to install is within the first month of getting your EV. This is when Level 1 charging frustration is highest and motivation is at its peak. Don't wait — Level 1 slow charging during that initial period is the most common catalyst. Also, if you bought your EV in a calendar year and want to claim all incentives in that same tax year, get your charger installed and permitted before December 31.
